Statement Condemning the Ethiopia Parliament Ratification of the State of Emergency in Ethiopia
Ethiopian American Civic Council (EACC) and Ethiopian Advocacy Network (EAN) condemn in the strongest terms possible the extreme six month State of Emergency that the Ethiopian regime that has declared on February 16, 2018, we also condemn today the EPRDF, the ruling party controlled members of parliament ratification of the controversial State of Emergency in Ethiopia .
Today’s EPRDF, ruling party controlled members of parliament ratification of the controversial State of emergency in Ethiopia is illegitimate. Many media stated that, the inconsistent vote report signposted the EPRDF parliament vote illegitimate process as usual. According to Abadula Gemeda, Speaker of the Parliament, 346 have voted in favor out of 547, while 88 voted against, and seven have abstained which should not pass due to the fewer of the 2/3 vote. However, their propaganda media, EBC later reported 395 have voted.
On February the US Embassy in Addis Ababa has issued the following statement regarding the state of Emergency, ” We strongly disagree with the Ethiopian government’s decision to impose a state of emergency that includes restrictions on fundamental rights such as assembly and expression.”
The HRes128 team will continue working to mobilize the diaspora and to engage with US congressional representatives to pass the resolution H.Res.128 supporting respect for human rights and encouraging inclusive governance in Ethiopia.
The new TPLF martial law not only places a direct military control of normal civilian functions and worsen the human rights in Ethiopian but also it completely strips the freedom of expression, assembly and association in the country, will have tremendous impact on the deteriorating political crisis as a result of massive protests demanding fundamental political reform in the country.
